Why KDP Shows Blank Pages and How to Fix Them in Word
Blank pages in KDP's preview can come from extra page breaks, section breaks, or Word's paragraph settings. Some are intentional, such as a blank page before a chapter that starts on the right. Others appear during PDF conversion. Amazon discusses these causes in its guide to converting Word files to PDF.
Start by comparing your Word file, exported PDF, and KDP preview. Find the first unexpected blank page. Then check the break or paragraph just before it. Fix that location before changing the rest of the book.
Most steps below apply to paperback and hardcover interiors. Kindle ebooks need a separate check because their text can adjust to the reader's screen and font size.
Save a backup before changing breaks. Then select Home > Show/Hide ¶. In Word for Windows, you can also press Ctrl + Shift + 8. On a Mac, press Command + 8.
Look around the affected page for empty paragraph marks and labeled page or section breaks. Switch to View > Draft if a section break is hard to find. Microsoft's blank page guide explains these controls.
The marks show how the page was built. Keep them visible while you make the following checks.
Select and delete empty paragraphs that serve no purpose. Then check for duplicate manual page breaks. Keep the break that starts the next chapter and remove any extra one creating the gap.
For example, a chapter may already begin after a Next Page section break. Adding another manual page break at that boundary can leave an unwanted page between chapters.
Make one change at a time. If the chapter moves into the previous chapter's text, undo the change and inspect the boundary again.
You can delete manual page breaks. Word's automatic page breaks depend on the available space and paragraph settings. Microsoft's page break instructions explain the difference.
An Odd Page section break starts the next section on the next odd-numbered page. An Even Page break starts it on the next even-numbered page. This can leave a blank page between sections. A Next Page break starts the section on the following page without requiring a particular side.
Hypothetical example: a chapter ends on page 25. An Odd Page section break starts the next chapter on page 27, leaving page 26 blank. If the chapter ends on page 26, the next odd page is already page 27. No extra blank is needed.
This explains why the same section setting can produce blanks before some chapters but not others. See Microsoft's section break guide.
If chapters may start on either side, change the affected section to Next Page. In Word for Windows:
1. Click in the section that begins after the unwanted blank page.
2. Open Layout, then select the small arrow in the Page Setup group.
3. Select the Layout tab in the dialog box.
4. Change Section start to New page. This is the Next Page section type.
5. Apply the change to This section, then select OK.
On a Mac, use Format > Document > Layout, then change Section start. You need desktop Word to change section breaks. Microsoft provides the Windows and Mac instructions.
Use Continuous only when the section can begin on the same page. It can remove a needed chapter opening if used without checking the result.
Avoid deleting every section break. Deleting one merges sections and applies the following section's formatting to the combined section. That can affect headers, footers, and other layout choices, as Microsoft's section deletion guide explains.
If text jumps forward or leaves a large empty area, select the affected paragraph. Open the Paragraph dialog box from the Home tab, then select Line and Page Breaks.
Check these settings:
· Page break before starts the paragraph on a new page.
· Keep with next keeps the paragraph with the paragraph after it.
· Keep lines together prevents a paragraph from splitting across pages.
These settings are useful in the right place. A heading often needs to stay with its opening paragraph. However, several body paragraphs linked by Keep with next can move together and leave space behind.
Clear a setting only where it causes the problem. Avoid changing the entire manuscript at once. Microsoft describes these options in its line and page break guide.
Word requires a final paragraph. If that paragraph spills onto another page, it can create a blank ending.
Turn on formatting marks, select only the final empty paragraph mark, and set its font size to 1 point. Also check whether Page break before is enabled for that paragraph. Microsoft recommends shrinking the final paragraph in its blank page instructions.
If the page remains, inspect the final break and the space used by the preceding content. Avoid reducing the book's margins just to make the page disappear. Check KDP's margin requirements before making a layout change.
For a print interior, save your Word changes and create a new PDF. Use File > Save As > PDF or the PDF option under File > Export, depending on your version. Give the file a clear name so you can identify the revised upload.
Open that PDF before sending it to KDP. Amazon recommends this check in its manuscript saving guide.
Review the former blank page, every chapter opening, and the end of the book. Check page numbering and update the table of contents if pages moved. KDP's Word formatting guide covers updating the contents and preparing a PDF.
If an illustration disappears during export, inspect Word's printing options for drawings and background images. Amazon includes missing image checks in its PDF conversion guidance.
Then upload the revised PDF and review Print Previewer again. Check that the selected trim size and bleed settings match the file. KDP may attempt to scale or reflow content when it detects formatting problems, so read any warnings. Its formatting troubleshooting page explains this behavior.
If the local PDF is correct but the preview still shows an unexplained interior blank, record the preview page position and nearby chapter text. Send those details to KDP support with screenshots of the mismatch.
For a book read from left to right, a blank page may preserve a chapter opening on the right. Keep it if that is part of your chosen layout.
KDP currently permits up to four consecutive blank pages at the beginning or middle of a manuscript and ten consecutive blank pages at the end. These are limits on consecutive blanks, not a requirement to add them. See KDP's blank page rules.
KDP also rounds a print manuscript's page count up to an even number when necessary. Separately, Amazon says its printing process may add blank pages at the end of a physical copy. Those production pages are covered in its proof and author copy guidance.
A blank between chapters and extra blanks at the back of a printed copy therefore need different checks. Removing breaks in Word will not control every page added during production.
A reflowable Kindle ebook has no fixed left and right page layout. Its text adjusts to the reading settings. Prepare a separate ebook file, remove print-only blank pages, and check for repeated breaks or empty paragraphs around chapter boundaries.
Keep useful chapter page breaks. Remove print headers, footers, and typed page numbers. Then preview the ebook at several font sizes and device settings. Amazon's ebook formatting guide covers these steps and links to Kindle Previewer.
A print PDF export is part of the print workflow. It does not replace checking the ebook conversion. Books with fixed layouts, such as some illustrated children's books, need their own format-specific review.
Start with that page and the section immediately before it. Make one correction, export again, and compare the result. Once the unwanted gap is gone, review the entire print preview. Order a proof copy to check chapter openings, page order, and the final pages on paper before publication.
