How to Fix the KDP Insufficient Gutter Error in Word
To fix the KDP insufficient gutter error in Word, set the Inside margin for your book’s page count, choose Mirror margins, and apply the change to the whole document. Leave Word’s separate Gutter box at 0 inches. Then save a fresh PDF and check it in KDP’s Print Previewer.
That setup follows KDP’s Word formatting guide. If the warning remains, inspect the flagged pages for content that extends into the binding area. A margin setting alone cannot correct every misplaced object.
The gutter is the space beside the spine. KDP uses the term for the inside margin. Your text needs enough clearance there so readers can see it after the book is bound.
Word adds a naming complication. Its Gutter box creates extra binding space in addition to the margin you have already set. Microsoft explains this in its gutter margin instructions. For this KDP workflow, put the required space in Inside and leave that extra field unused.
Hypothetical example: An Inside margin of 0.625 inches plus a Gutter value of 0.625 inches creates 1.25 inches of inside space. That can make the text area much narrower than intended. Using Inside at 0.625 inches and Gutter at 0 gives you the intended 0.625 inches.
Save a copy of your Word file first. Then compare its page size with the trim size selected in KDP. Trim size is the size of the finished printed book.
In Word for Windows, go to Layout > Size > More Paper Sizes. Enter the width and height for your book and apply them to the whole document. A book with a 6 by 9 inch trim size and no bleed needs 6 by 9 inch pages.
Bleed needs extra page area for artwork that reaches the trimmed edge. Add 0.125 inches to the width and 0.25 inches to the height. For a 6 by 9 inch book with bleed, the file’s pages should be 6.125 by 9.25 inches. KDP’s Word for Mac guide covers this sizing and the Mac page setup controls.
Use the bleed setting that matches your artwork and file dimensions. Selecting Bleed in KDP does not repair text placed too close to the spine.
Use the total interior page count, including front matter and blank pages. The last printed page number may exclude those pages. KDP calculates the count from your file and rounds an odd count up to an even number, as explained in its formatting troubleshooting guide.
KDP’s minimum inside margins are:
· 24 to 150 pages need at least 0.375 inches or 9.6 mm.
· 151 to 300 pages need at least 0.5 inches or 12.7 mm.
· 301 to 500 pages need at least 0.625 inches or 15.9 mm.
· 501 to 700 pages need at least 0.75 inches or 19.1 mm.
· 701 to 828 pages need at least 0.875 inches or 22.3 mm.
These are minimum clearances. You can allow more space for readability. The available page counts still depend on your chosen print format, ink, paper, and trim size.
For the top, bottom, and outside margins, KDP requires at least 0.25 inches without bleed or 0.375 inches with bleed. Bleed does not reduce the required inside margin.
Use the desktop version of Word. Word for the web preserves existing mirror margins but cannot create them, according to Microsoft’s mirror margin guide. Menu names may vary by version.
1. Open Layout > Margins > Custom Margins.
2. Under Multiple pages, choose Mirror margins.
3. Enter your required binding clearance in Inside.
4. Set Gutter to 0 inches.
5. Enter the top, bottom, and outside margins for your layout.
6. Set Apply to to Whole document, then select OK.
Mirror margins place the inside space beside the binding on facing pages. Simply increasing the left margin on every page would put that extra space on the wrong edge of alternating pages.
A manuscript may contain separate sections for front matter, chapters, or landscape pages. Microsoft notes that a margin change can affect only the current section. See its custom margin instructions.
After applying the change, place your cursor in each section and reopen Custom Margins to confirm the settings. Pay attention to any section that contains a flagged page. If a section needs a different layout, check it separately rather than deleting its section break.
Then review the new page count. A wider inside margin leaves less room on each line, so text can move onto extra pages. KDP’s Word guide advises checking the inside margin again whenever the count changes.
Hypothetical example: A manuscript starts at 298 pages. After you increase the inside margin, it reaches 304 pages. The required minimum has now moved from 0.5 inches to 0.625 inches. Update the margin, export again, and confirm that the finished file still fits its page range.
This is a useful reason to make one change at a time. Keep the page size fixed while you resolve the gutter, and check chapter openings after the text moves.
If only a few pages remain flagged, use them as starting points for inspection. Check text boxes, pictures, tables, running headers, and page numbers near the spine. Move or resize the specific item that crosses the allowed area.
Also check paragraph indents. Select the affected paragraph and open the Paragraph dialog. An unintended negative left, right, or first line indent can push text toward or beyond a margin. Correct the affected setting without resetting intentional block quotes or list formatting. Microsoft’s indent guide explains these controls.
If the page looks empty where KDP reports an error, turn on Show/Hide in Word’s Home tab. Its paragraph symbol reveals spaces and formatting marks. Remove stray spaces that extend beyond the allowed area.
KDP documents two easily missed causes: invisible spaces and italic letters that extend past a text box. Its hidden character examples show why a page can look acceptable yet fail the check. For a character that barely crosses the boundary, move the text inward or allow a little more clearance.
Avoid pushing whole paragraphs across with repeated spaces or tabs. That makes later edits harder to control. Fix the margin, indent, or object position responsible for the problem.
In Word, use File > Save As or Save a Copy, choose PDF, and save a new version. In the PDF options, export the whole document and choose Document under Publish what so review markup is excluded. Microsoft provides the PDF export steps.
KDP requires interior files with one book page per PDF page. Keep the pages in reading order. Do not export printer spreads or place two book pages on one PDF page. A manuscript with bleed must be uploaded as a PDF. See KDP’s manuscript file requirements.
Open the saved PDF and check its page dimensions, total count, and previously flagged pages. Give the file a name you can identify, such as manuscript_gutter_fixed.pdf, so you upload the corrected version.
In your KDP Bookshelf, open Edit paperback content or Edit hardcover content for the book. Upload the revised manuscript. In the Book Preview section, select Launch Previewer. KDP’s preview instructions explain where to find it.
Inspect the revised layout, including chapter starts and facing pages. Correct any remaining errors in Word, export again, and repeat the check. If the page count changed, review the cover dimensions too. KDP’s Cover Creator guidance explains that cover sizing depends on the interior page count and paper choices.
Once the preview clears, order a proof copy and read several pages near the middle of the book. Check whether the text is comfortable to read beside the spine. KDP lists a physical proof as another way to preview your printed book.
Start with the first page KDP flags. Confirm the final page count, verify its section’s Inside margin, and inspect any content near the binding. Then upload the corrected PDF and check that page again.
